How to Remove a Computer Virus: A Step-by-Step Guide

In this section, we outline how to remove a computer virus from both PCs and Macs. Follow these steps to protect your system and restore its health.

Removing a Virus from a PC

Computer viruses often remain undetected without antivirus software, which makes installing virus protection on all devices essential. If you suspect your PC is infected, follow these 10 steps:

1. Download and install a virus scanner

Start by downloading a trusted virus scanner or a comprehensive internet security solution.

2. Disconnect from the internet

To prevent further damage or virus spread, disconnect your PC from the internet while removing the virus. Some viruses use your internet connection to spread.

3. Reboot in Safe Mode

To protect your system during virus removal, reboot in Safe Mode. Here's how:

   - Turn your computer off, then on again.

   - When the screen lights up, press F8 to open the ‘Advanced Boot Options’ menu.

   - Select ‘Safe Mode with Networking.’

   - Stay disconnected from the internet.

4. Delete temporary files

Remove temporary files using Disk Cleanup. Here's a quick guide:

   - Click the Windows logo.

   - Type "Temporary Files."

   - Choose “Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files.”

   - Select “Temporary Internet Files” from the Disk Cleanup list and click OK.

   - Confirm the “Delete Files” action.

5. Run a virus scan

Run a scan using your antivirus software or internet security solution.

6. Delete or quarantine the virus

If the scan detects a virus, it may affect multiple files. Choose to ‘Delete’ or ‘Quarantine’ the infected files. Then, run another scan to ensure no additional threats remain.

7. Reboot your computer

Once the virus is removed, reboot your computer normally. It is no longer necessary to be in Safe Mode.

8. Change your passwords

To safeguard your system, change all your passwords in case they were compromised. Although not always necessary, it’s a good precaution.

9. Update your software, browser, and operating system

Ensure that your software, browser, and operating system are up to date to prevent vulnerabilities that viruses may exploit.

Removing a Virus from a Mac ( Mac users)

Contrary to popular belief, Macs can get viruses too. Though fewer viruses target Macs, some malicious software, like 'MacDefender' and 'MacProtector', aim to trick users into downloading them. If your Mac is infected, follow these six steps:

1. Quit the affected application

If you notice unusual behavior, quit the suspicious app or software.

2. Check Activity Monitor

Open 'Activity Monitor' and search for known Mac viruses like 'MacDefender' or 'MacSecurity'.

3. Quit the virus process

If you find a known virus, click ‘Quit Process’ in Activity Monitor.

4. Delete the virus from Applications

Go to the ‘Applications’ folder, locate the virus file, and drag it into the ‘Trash.’

5. Empty the Trash

To permanently remove the virus, empty the Trash folder.

6. Update your software and apps

Ensure your operating system and apps are up to date to benefit from the latest security patches and protection.

Following these steps will help keep your PC or Mac free of viruses and ensure optimal performance.
